Memebox's Korean Beauty Starter Kit - Troubled Skin DAY 01

Something people might not know about me is that I am extremely proud of my skin. It's pretty nice. It's pale, sure, but it's clear and smooth and it usually doesn't take much to keep it clean and look flawless.

Until recently.

My skin has been a nightmare these last few weeks. I have no clue why. It's been worse than it has been in recent memory. I hadn't changed what I was doing, which was a simple once a day cleanser and toner in morning and night with a BB cream and then makeup removal at night. But my face has been breaking out all over the place. This is one of the few things I actually really like about myself. I had to do something.

Recently, I had heard about Korean skincare routines. Being a recovering Asianophile, I of course loved the idea of anything Korean. For those who don't know, Korean women, and Asian women in general, tend to be known for having flawless skin. Although this could be partially a genetic thing, what they are famous for is their skincare products. They use a lot of them, and they use a wide variety. This website has a good breakdown of the basics if you want to know more:

I was not up, financially or time-wise, for committing to the entire 10+ step process. Although I lusted after Peach and Lilly's kit for oily skin (http://peachandlily.com/products/korean-skincare-regimen-oily-acne-prone-skin), I simply could not justify paying over $200 for it. Also, it's currently out of stock. I am aware that not all products work as well for everyone, so the idea of spending that much money on something I was not confident about was too much.

I then heard about Memebox, which offers similar products as Peach and Lilly, but their boxes are smaller and cheaper. They also offer makeup, which I may dabble in later. I was at first torn between two boxes, one for oily/combination skin (https://us.memebox.com/our-boxes/korean-beauty-starter-kit-oily-combination-skin?pdref=category), and one for troubled skin (https://us.memebox.com/our-boxes/korean-beauty-starter-kit-trouble-skin-beginwithskin2?pdref=category). I settled on the troubled skin box because if anyone's skin was in trouble, it was mine.

I was in luck! The boxes, typically around $70, were on sale for $39, shipping included. Sold.

The box advertises as coming with four full sized products: A foaming cleanser, a peeling gel, a toner, and a soothing gel. The different products, with their prices, are described in detail on the link I provided.

It took about a week for my box to arrive. It came in a standard brown shipping box, but the actual Memebox looks like this:

boxy box

It's rather cute! I had just come home from the KCMO screening of The Devil's Carnival: Aleluia, and was really tired and aching for bed, but I did take a minute to open the box and check out what I had gotten. I was in for a surprise.

The website said the box was coming with four full sized products. What I got was those four products, a small tube of BB cream, and three face masks! It was an excellent surprise. Here's what the inside of the box looks like:

The third face mask is under the rest of the stuff

I really wanted to try them out last night, but I waited until this morning when I showered.

First Step: Etude House AC Clinic Daily Acne Foam Cleanser Full-Size 150 ml($11)

First of all, let me warn any of you wanting to get this box. All of the tubes came wrapped in plastic, which was a cinch to take off. However, I did not expect the tubes to also have a small metallic piece of paper over the hole, like a ketchup bottle. For the cleanser, I couldn't get a grip with my fingers or nails, and ended up pulling it off with my teeth. I do NOT ADVISE THIS.

But anyway. The cleanser comes out as a somewhat thick white cream. Unsure of how concentrated the product might be, I used probably an inch and a half long squiggle. I rubbed it all over my face, and it does foam up pleasantly. I was worried because cream + oily skin is not usually a great combination, but it felt light and clean and washed right off! Note: This product is VERY concentrated. I definitely used too much.

Next Step: Goodal Natural Clear Mild Peeling Gel Full-Size 120ml  ($25)

This came out very thin and loose, especially compared to the cleanser, and it was incredibly light. Peeling gels are supposed to exfoliate I guess, but this product doesn't have the beads I had come to expect. I could tell that there was a very slight roughness to it as I rubbed it over my face, but I could barely tell that it was there. It felt good though, and again, washed off cleanly.

Third Step: Innisfree Jejubija Anti-Trouble Skin Toner Full-Size 200ml ($19)

I have been using facial pads to tone my face, but thankfully I did have some cotton balls. I will probably get some round cotton pads to use in the future. I was initially apprehensive about this product simply because I have a lot agitated acne going on right now, and toners usually make them sting badly. This did not! I could have used more, perhaps, but it left my face feeling clean and fresh. No stinging or alcohol feeling at all!

Fourth Step: Benton Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel Full-Size 100ml ($17)

Full disclosure: I am not entirely sure what this does yet. The website says it has aloe vera and stuff and it's supposed to even out my skintone and fade blemishes. I'll have to take before and after pictures to see if there are any immediate results. For now, I do like the cool aloe on my skin, and like everything else, I didn't feel like it was clogging my pores or anything like that.

Initial Reaction: I am happy I bought it. I will post updates probably every few days to track the progress my skin makes. I am thinking I will do this over the course of 30 days. I really hope it works. I will also posts reviews of the different masks and the BB cream I got as well. Here is a picture of my face from right after I finished applying everything. No makeup, except some lingering stubborn smudges from last night.
